Ponte 16 in Macau, China
26 April 2011Macau is a city filled with eye opening cultures with its Portuguese influence contrasted with the huge casinos that remind you of Las Vegas. The booming economy in China has made a massive impact on the cityscape over the last few years. But rather than multi-storey skyscrapers, Macau has grown to like its mega-casinos and hotels. The contrast is often blinding with traditional Portuguese style buildings backdropped by the towering casinos and hotels. I spent a couple of days exploring Macau and stayed at the five star Sofitel Ponte 16 hotel.
With over 400 rooms, Ponte 16 is a modestly sized hotel situated by the waterfront. It’s nicely finished with a spacious grand lobby designed with a combination of elegant modern design and a classic touch thrown into the mix.
The rooms are spacious with quality fittings, complimentary toiletries and marble bathroom. Air conditioning controls, a desk work area and a decent sized built-in LCD television were available from my room with floor to ceiling glass windows. Despite recent investment in new buildings and regeneration in Macau, there aren’t many tall buildings that can match the grandeur of the hotels and casinos – the net effect of this is that you get a fantastic unrestricted view of your surroundings.
In the morning I was able to enjoy a breakfast buffet which offered a generous selection of hot and cold foods. The smell of fresh food and coffee greets you as you walk in and the nicely presented pastries and fruit are a welcome sight.
The surrounding area includes local historical sites and plenty of food and shopping places to enjoy the best of Macau. In the evenings, you can enjoy the dancing lights of the distant casinos from your window.
If you’re planning on visiting Macau, do consider Ponte 16 if your search criteria is comfortable modern rooms with grand fixtures and fantastic buffets.
